Guardians of the 1st Amendment Memorial Dedication

Three years ago five members of the Annapolis Capital were murdered in their offices. The community has commissioned a memorial to their memory as well as keeping the importance of the 1st Amendment of the US Constitution alive including the right to free speech and protest.

Speakers at the dedication will include Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman and Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley. Relatives of the slain Capital staff and others from the community will also speak.

The dedication will take place in Newman Park, 99 Newman Street, directly across from the Marriott Waterfront Hotel.  The public is invited.

The five slain Annapolis Capital staff members to be recognized are Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith and Wendi Winters.

The organizations leading the effort to build the memorial include the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee of Anne Arundel County, The Caucus of African American Leaders, The State of Maryland, Anne Arundel County Government and the City of Annapolis.

The text of the 1st Amendment:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
